Do part C plans cover dental?

This picture demonstrates the type of dental coverage that a Medicare beneficiary can receive with the right Part C Plan by their side.

When it pertains to our health in general, it is common for us to neglect certain parts of our body over time as we age. One of the most prevalent health issues that I’ve seen on the field as an agent is a lack of proper dental hygiene. As an agent of 5 years in the Medicare Advantage side, I do my absolute best to ensure that my members can improve that smile of theirs without breaking the piggy bank. Now for those of you that would like to do the same, feel free to read on to gain some valuable insight on how to choose the right plan for all of your dental coverage needs.

Medicare vs Part C Plans. What dental work do they cover?

Although Medicare does a fantastic job of covering major medical services, what I have noticed throughout the years is that it falls short when it comes to covering dental work in general. If truth be told, the only type of dental work that Medicare will cover would be the reconstruction of the jaw in case of an accident. With so little dental coverage available through Medicare, it is no wonder that many Medicare recipients are opting to go with a Medicare Advantage plan to alleviate the costs. With the right part c plan by your side, it’s possible to get coverage for procedures such as cleanings, exams, x-rays, extractions, fillings and so much more. Before choosing a Medicare Advantage plan, make sure to go over the evidence of coverage with an agent or insurance representative to ensure that you’re getting the right type of coverage for your dental needs.

The pros of dental coverage through a Part C Plan.

With most advantage plans, there’s a lot to smile about. They can in some instances cover dental work with no need to pay for a monthly premium. Another advantage of part c plans is that they can offer at times the opportunity to get some preventive and comprehensive work  done with little or no copays whatsoever. That in and of itself can be great for those of you who are trying to keep the costs to a minimum. One more pro that I appreciate about these part c plans is the vast amount of dentists willing to accept the coverage. It isn’t too far from the realms of reality to use dental coverage with one of over thousands of dentists that practice dentistry here in the United States of America.

The cons of dental coverage through a Part C Plan.

While dental coverage through a Part C plan has its advantages, there are also drawbacks to consider. Annual maximums limit coverage, potentially resulting in out-of-pocket costs. Another disadvantage would be the lack of coverage in certain situations. If a member seeks dental work from a dentist that is not contracted with Medicare and or the plan itself, then it may lead to the claims being denied altogether. One last disadvantage that I have noticed would be the limits to the frequency in which the services can be used. As an example, if a member gets dentures and loses them, they might have to wait five whole years before the plan is willing to cover them once again.

Is it worth it to get dental coverage through a Part C Plan?

After weighing the pros and the cons against one another, what I have concluded is that it can be worth it to get dental coverage through an advantage plan in certain situations. While advantage plans set limits on coverage amounts and provider networks, they effectively reduce overall costs while improving your dental hygiene. For that reason and that reason alone, I see part c plans as a viable option for those of you on Medicare who are trying to improve that smile of yours for the lowest cost possible.
